Shipmates can arrange for the transport of your vehicle. Cars are shipped either in a 20 or 40 foot container or, on a car carrier vessel referred to as a Ro-Ro vessel. (Roll on –Roll off). There are several options when shipping a car. If you have household goods you plan to ship, we can arrange for both the car and your personal items to be shipped in a standard 20 or 40 foot container. Generally, there is about 5-7 cubic meters of space left inside a 20 foot container (depending on size of vehicle) after the vehicle has been loaded. If you do not have enough household goods to fill a container, the best option is to ship your car onboard aRo-Ro vessel. The easiest way to ship your car is for you to de-register the vehicle on you own. We will need the original certificate of de-registration for export customs clearance and a Proof of Purchase (if the title is under someone else’s name). Pick up of your vehicle is available nationwide or, to save money, you are welcome to drive your car to our designated warehouse located near the port of departure. Shipping cars to the United States. Shipmates is able to ship cars to the United States. However, you are advised that the U.S. has very strict regulations on the importation of motor vehicles. Unless your car was manufactured in accordance with United States regulations and you have documentation to prove this, it may not be worthwhile to ship your car to the U.S. A car made from a U.S. manufacturer bought in Japan does not mean the vehicle is exempt from complying with U.S. motor vehicle importation laws. When importing cars to the U.S., the shipper must satisfy at least 2 governmental bodies: EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Agency). More information on the rules and regulations can be found at their respective websites. www.epa.gov www.nhtsa.dot.gov In addition to Federal regulations, some States such as California have their own regulations.
